Sometimes I do art to relieve tension. Most of these cartoons were done in Febuary in the back of a passenger van with several performance artists touring 28 cities in 30 days. There was the usual drama: losing cell phones, purses getting stolen, props getting lost, people getting sick, people breaking up. I brought a sketch book and colored pencils to keep myself preoccupied and forget about problems. I never thought about what exactly I was going to do. I just started making a few curley cue marks on paper and it would look like something, like a bird, or a dog. And then I would begin to elaborate on it by adding color. I don’t like rendering that is, using shadows and highlights, because it overproduces my cartoons. Therefore, I began using only lines to color with. But when I used only lines to color with, the cartoon animals became ridiculously psychedelic and they hurt my eyes to look at them. So I decided to fill in only parts of the animals with lines and the rest would be more shape driven. Each time I finished a cartoon animal, I felt relaxed and satisfied.
